The 15th Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award will be held in Guangzhou from November 18 to 19 this year. In 2009, with the cooperation of Chinese scholars represented by Professor Dong Qiang, the French Embassy in Beijing established the Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award, which aims to promote the translation and dissemination of French literature and academic works in China.

Since its inception, Fu Lei Prize has been supported by many cultural celebrities represented by Nobel Prize winners Leclezio and Mo Yan. In the process of the continuous development of cultural exchanges between France and China, Fu Lei Prize applauded the work of the translator as a cultural ferry. Each year, the Frey Awards selected two best Chinese translations from French, one in literature and one in social sciences, and the Rookie Award was established in 2013 to encourage young translators.

From Ule Superior's collection of poems "Strange Friends" to "tens of thousands in the World", a historical and cultural book focusing on mathematics, and legal historian Jean-Louis Alperan's "History of Private Law in France: from the Great Revolution to the Contemporary Age", this year's works shortlisted for the Frei Prize fully reflect, as always, the diverse vitality of contemporary French translation in China.

the benchmarking of French-Chinese translation books

A total of 46 entries were received in this year's Frey Award, 35 in social science and 11 in literature. On Monday, September 4, 2023, the jury selected 10 shortlisted works, which were officially announced at a news conference in Beijing on October 12. The second press conference will be held in Guangzhou on October 26.

The chairman of this year's jury will be Pu Haolin, a journalist and writer. In addition to the permanent judges, two winners of the last Frey Award will also participate in the final review, supported by two special Chinese guests, namely literary critic Xie Youshun and writer Wang William.

This year's Fu Lei Award presentation ceremony will be held on November 18 at Guangzhou Yudelai Art and Culture Co., Ltd. (also known as Oriental gathering Art College). This cultural landmark in Shamian, Guangzhou shows how buildings with a long history are closely integrated with art and culture. There will be several literary lectures the next day. At that time, the French invited guest novelist and author of "the elegance of the hedgehog" Miaoli Barry will attend the award ceremony and literary dialogue. This is also the first time that the Fu Lei Award has welcomed a French guest since the epidemic. This is also an opportunity to communicate closely with shortlisted translators and editors.

translator, messenger of French literature and scholarship

As a big country in the introduction of French books, China has been at the top of the list of copyright transferers in French publishing for ten years in a row. In 2022, about 1300 transfer contracts were signed between the two sides. The publication of these works in China is inseparable from the hard work of translators. More and more young people have joined the ranks of translators. It is worth mentioning that among the ten shortlisted translators for this year's Frey Award, eight were born in the 1980s and 1990s.
